Hospitality Journeys: Tinbox Coffee Company

The Hospitality Table Cornwall team has been across the County speaking to some of Cornwall’s familiar hospitality faces to find out about their journey into the industry to help inspire and educate the next generation of hospitality professionals. This time we speak to Chris Wolff of the Tinbox Coffee Company.

TinBox Coffee Company provides speciality coffee, trading from a vintage Citroen HY van. Using all locally sourced products from suppliers such as Origin, Trink Dairy and Polgoon, TinBox likes to stay true to Cornwall and has a permanent spot on Penzance promenade when it’s not attending Cornish weddings and events.

Chris Wolff, Owner of TinBox Coffee Company said: “We are trying to create a unique experience for our customers through the use of a vintage van, attention to small details, while delivering a high quality Cornish product.”

Chris had worked in London prior to moving to Cornwall and had always been drawn to the speciality coffee shops.

“The coffee tasted amazing and the environment to drink it in was always unique – this daily routine was the best part of my day. When moving to Cornwall, the appeal for working outdoors, combined with my love of good quality coffee sparked our idea of TinBox!”

Despite a relatively short hospitality career so far, Chris describes it as the best career decision he has ever made.

“The decision was made on Godrevy beach in November 2017, shortly after moving to Cornwall. I saw a horsebox on the beach serving coffee and felt and instant connection. From that point, it snowballed very quickly and I was trading on a permanent pitch in our van from the April 2018. I trained through one of Origin’s educational courses to understand barista basics and really enjoyed it.”

Chris admits that it was daunting setting up a business from scratch, especially in an industry he had no experience in, yet he has achieved it due to his drive and passion for hospitality.

“The best part of the TinBox Coffee Company is building relationships with my customers and other businesses in the industry.”

“It really can be a satisfying career and can open many avenues. There’s so many areas to experience and hospitality allows you to express your individuality. I have had only good experiences with the people in the industry in Cornwall; they are all passionate, innovative and enthusiastic, so I think that says it all.”
