Hospitality Journeys: Samantha Banks, St Michael’s Resort, Falmouth

The Hospitality Table Cornwall team has been across the County speaking to some of Cornwall’s familiar hospitality faces to find out about their journey into the industry to help inspire and educate the next generation of hospitality professionals. This week we spoke to Samantha Banks, Operations Manager at St Michaels Resort.

Samantha Banks, Hotel Operations Manager at St Michaels Resort hadn’t thought about working in the hospitality industry until the age of 25.

Due to a family bereavement, Sam decided that she wanted to do something different with her life, so enrolled onto a foundation degree in Hospitality and Beach Resort Management, while working part time at St Michaels Resort as reception and reservationist.

“I was very lucky St Michaels Resort supported me throughout my course and then put me on a trainee management programme which enabled me to work in all areas of the hotel. They then supported me with my decision to continue to my studies and complete a BA in Business Enterprise.”

Sam shares that it was difficult studying while having a young child as well as working, but with a strong family support system, Sam was able to work hard at her degree, winning Student of the year for 2 years and runner up in the Student Star awards in her 3rd year.

Once her studies were complete, Sam was able to apply for the Business Development Manager role at the resort and then progressed over the years working in operations support roles, as front of house manager, assistant operations manager and then onto her current role as the Hotel Operations Manager.

“I really love my job; I love the variety, the people, the team and being able to be part of people’s holidays, celebrations and work life. It’s a job where you have the ability to impact and improve every guest’s experience.”

Sam says that her best achievements have been getting a first in her degree, bringing up her daughter, and progressing to a senior management role at the resort.

“Be prepared to work hard. If you work hard and work fair, the sky is the limit. There is so many different roles within hospitality to grow and progress through until you find the area you want to settle in. Next stop, General Manager!”
