Students from schools across the county joined together at The Royal Cornwall Showground for the Cornwall Skills Show; an event that showcases a huge variety of industries and career pathways.
Employers saw over 3,000, 14-16 year olds on 8th October, looking to find out about careers in hospitality alongside a range of sectors on the day. The hospitality and tourism area had a mix of businesses including bed-making racing with The Headland Hotel & Spa, wild vegetables with St Austell Brewery, smoothie tasting with Waterfront Polzeath (with ingredients sponsored by Westcountry Fruit Sales) and mocktails and carpaccio tasters on Hospitality Table Cornwall’s stand with Penrose Kitchen.
Students were urged to try the tasters, speak to business representatives about their journeys into hospitality and ask any questions or myths they had about the industry.
Kate Poole, Project Coordinator of Hospitality Table Cornwall said: “It’s so important to us as an employer-led project, to feedback what employers seek in their businesses to the next generation, who may one day be working for them. It was great to see so many pupils coming through the doors who have their hearts set on a career in hospitality. The Skills Show gave them the opportunity to speak to us, explore different aspects to hospitality and find out about Apprenticeship and work experience opportunities. For those who have never considered hospitality, the event opened their eyes and gave them an insight into the wide range of opportunities within the hospitality sector.
The event was free for both schools, colleges and exhibitors and was organised by the CIoS Career Hub with support from Next Steps South West. To find out more about the event, visit www.careershubcios.co.uk/events/cornwall-skills-show
