Inspiring the next generation at the Cornwall Skills Show

As a lead for the Hospitality and Tourism sector at the Skills Show on 19th March, we were able to inspire thousands of students from across the county about an industry we’re proud to be a part of.

Organised by the Careers Hub Cornwall with the support of Next Steps South West, the event was held at the Royal Cornwall Showground and saw over 2,500 Cornish students aged 15-16 get involved with activities led by further and higher education colleges, universities and over 100 businesses covering eight key growth sectors.

Hospitality Table Cornwall used their space to promote different aspects of hospitality including how to make mocktails and identifying unusual ingredients with the help from Westcountry Fruit Sales – who also gave out delicious tasters to students.

The team saw a real passion throughout the day, with some students knowing exactly what they wanted to do in the industry from an early age.

Also joining us in the Hospitality and Tourism sector was the Headland Hotel; who not only had a stand, but whose Concierge Emma supported us with mocktail making, Westcountry Fruit Sales who supported our secondary stand with Truro and Penwith College at the show, Bodmin Jail, Springboard Charity, The Greenbank Hotel, Newquay Zoo, St Austell Brewery and Cornish Pirates.

Also at the event, we highlighted the launch of our new brochure, as well as a new summer project launch called Host. The initiative is to provide those interested in hospitality with a guaranteed interview for a summer job, after successfully completing a five-day course at Truro and Penwith College. The course will enable students to learn about different aspects of the hospitality sector; including kitchen skills, front of house skills, customer service skills and placement in a business. We would like to thank those who attended our stand, as well as the businesses who supported us and the Hospitality and Tourism sector at the Cornwall Skills Show. We thoroughly enjoyed inspiring the next generation (and stormtroopers) and can’t wait to return.
